The primary airport serving Florence is Amerigo Vespucci Airport (Peretola), located about 6 km from the city center. The T2 Vespucci tram line connects the airport directly to Santa Maria Novella (SMN) Central Train Station, with services running every 5 minutes and a journey time of about 20 minutes.
Alternatively, travelers can also use Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport or Pisa Galileo Galilei Airport, both well connected to Florence by train and bus services.
By Train
Florence lies on the main rail link between Milan and Rome, making it a key stop for high-speed trains. The city’s principal railway station, Santa Maria Novella (SMN), is centrally located and serves regional, interregional, and international routes.
Florence is also connected to major international hubs such as Paris, Munich, and Geneva via high-speed trains. Frequent Frecciarossa, Italo, and EuroCity services ensure rapid connections to cities across Italy and beyond. Other important stations in Florence include Campo di Marte (near the stadium) and Rifredi.
By Car
If you’re driving, be aware of the Zona a Traffico Limitato (ZTL), a restricted traffic zone covering much of the historic center. Unauthorized vehicles entering the ZTL may incur fines, but tourists can access accommodations or garages within the ZTL by providing their vehicle details within 3 hours of entry.
By Bus
Florence is accessible via various intercity and regional bus services. The city has designated hubs for intercity buses, such as Terminal Vittorio Veneto and Montelungo, offering connections to destinations like Siena, Grosseto, and the Chianti region. Many intercity bus tickets also include access to local tram and bus lines.
