Foreign exchange, banking facilities
The official currency in Italy is the Euro (EUR).
British Pounds, US Dollars, and other major currencies can be easily exchanged at the following places:
• Banks
• Exchange offices
• Airports
• Major hotels
Exchange offices usually offer better exchange rates than banks. At airports, the rates may be slightly higher than in the city center.
The most commonly accepted payment methods are cash, credit cards, and debit cards. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, with Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Maestro being the most common. It’s advisable to check in advance for any foreign transaction fees.
Another option is contactless payment via Apple Pay or Google Pay.
Electrical systems
The voltage in Italy, as in most of Europe, is 230V/50Hz.
Italy uses Type C (2-pin) and Type F (2-pin with grounding clips) plugs. Type C plugs are widely compatible with European sockets.
Most power sockets are designed for round-pin plugs. Common travel electronics with standard European two-pin plugs can be used without issues. Adaptors are available in most hotels.
Taxi
There are several taxi companies to choose from in Florence.
Taxi fares in Italy are generally more affordable than in some other European cities, but they can still be costly. Tariffs are required to be visible inside the vehicle.
A taxi ride to Florence Airport (Peretola) typically costs around €25–€30.
